What Are LED TVs

Technology advances almost at lightning speed.  One minute everyone is talking about LCD televisions and the next there are 3DTVs, LED TVs and much more.  It is nearly impossible to keep up with technology unless you find a site that will offer you the most up to date information.  This page will explore what LED TVs are and how the technology is different from standard LCD TVs.

First you’ll need to know a little jargon.  Right now in stores and online you can find LCD televisions with HD capabilities.  The “standard” televisions with analogue signals have come to an end.  All broadcasters are sending out HD signals, though until you upgrade your TV you will not see the HD video.  The LED television is actually an LCD TV, but it has something the “standard” version does not have.  It has LED backlighting.

LED TVs are produced by Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, Philips, ProScan, Vizio, and LG Electronics.  The main thing you need to note about their LED products is that the lighting is no longer using fluorescent lights. Instead it is the LED technology, which has been around for several years now.  LED lights were first introduced for Christmas and house lights.  The technology was then taken to make the RGB and White Edge LED TVs you can purchase from the aforementioned electronics companies.  The RGB LEDs are positioned behind the television panel.  The White Edge LEDs are on the rim of the screen to diffuse the light behind the screen.

The reason there are two types of LED TVs is due to size.  The RGB LEDs require a larger television overall, but enhance the colours allowing for a more detailed object.  The Edge LEDs provide a slimmer screen and is supposed to provide a more uniform colour range.

When you examine the LCD versus the LED LCD TV you will immediately notice a difference in the picture.  The LED screen will be much brighter, which also gives it an appearance of being clearer.  To truly notice the difference and understand the technology you should compare both TVs side by side.  LED stands for light emitting diode and acts as a semiconductor to create the light source.  To be clear the first LED was created in 1962, but the modern versions have been around since the late 90s.  There are a number of advantages to LED TVs, which will be looked at on another page.

For this section you need to know that LED TVs are simply a technology using two different technologies previously discovered and sold.  The electronic companies are always working to improve their products.  This means they followed the next step in enhancing picture and brightness of televisions by including LED technology with LCD screens, which are already the better television option.  Plasma was once considered the best idea because LCD was created more for data and computer screens.  Advancement in this area showed fewer issues with LCD screens, thus the natural progression to LCD LED TVs as the current “best TV.”
